Lake E Daily News, Monday 4 May 2009
Demob of containers off the lake continued today. We now have 8 of our 15 containers all lined up behind camp in preparation for final inventory. 2 of the 4 platform sections on sleds have been pulled to camp today. Four containers and the remaining 2 sections of the platform on the ice. Even the submersible pump was excavated from under the ice. Here in the office we have been communicating with the outside world about the next steps for moving the containers to Pevek and flying the cores to St. Petersburg to clear customs.
The helicopter from Pevek arrived today to pick up Jerry Jensen (DOSECC), Volker Neth (EBA), Christian Koeberl (Vienna). These three all fly out of Pevek for Moscow tomorrow. Grisha Fedorov of AARI also flew out today so that he could assist the project more productively from Pevek as the project winds down. Grisha will remain in Pevek for the next few weeks.
The chopper also carried out all of impact related cores (total weight of 1 metric ton) and geophysical equipment used for measuring physical properties (800 kgs).
As they flew off, the rest of us were eyeing the bag of apples, oranges, candy bars and other goodies sent out to us by Chico from Pevek. (thanks Chico!). Lots of caribou can also be seen browsing where the snow is thin at the base of the mountains behind camp.
take care....Julie BG
