Lake E Daily News, Thursday 7 May, 2009
The most remarkable thing to report from Lake E today is the weather. Despite the forecast and cool conditions last night, today was our warmest day ever with the thermometer reaching +10 C (50 deg F) in the shade. With only a little wind from the south, and only a few thin clouds above, it felt like a record breaker. According to the NCEP reanalysis data of this area since 1948, temperatures like this are 9 deg above the normal maximum for this date. Daily maxima this high should not occur until early June. To those of you who built the impressive igloo here next to camp, its almost toast!
Moira and Jared (from Soundprint) jointed a group of us for a hike up to the base of mountains west of camp after lunch. We were struck by how rapidly larger patches of tundra are emerging and the snow now has a totally different sound underfoot. Arctic ground squirrels (sicsic, Inuit term) were seen several times today having recently emerged from hibernation.
Pavel reports tonight that the Supply Container has now been completely inventoried. We have located most of the items planned for transport from Pevek to the Cherski Science Station by CPS. More clean up on the lake is planned for tomorrow.
