Lake E News of the Day, April 7th

Drilling today continued in hole GLAD11-1c between 185 and 195 m sediment depth with continuing issues of poor recovery with coarse grained sand.  A few sections were recovered consisting of mud with some fine sand and one interval at about 191 m gave us >100% recovery when we were briefly back into stratified fine muds.    The day shift determined we are about the run out of mud (a container is coming but 2 days away).  So the night crew is now planning to attempt to get to 200m depth and then will use what mud we have to stabilized the hole so that the down hole loggers can run their instruments through the section from  150 to 200m depth over most of Wednesday.

Good news today is that Joe and Jerry (DOSECC replacement drillers) and Chico of CPS all arrived safely today in Pevek along with 22 thermal boxes  (i.e., Chico still needs to confirm in the morning that they all made it).   Also great news  -- it was calculated today that our earlier core recovery was really terrific--  89.8 % in core GLAD11- 1a (to -148m),  and 98% in core GLAD11- 1b (-117m).   So it is really core 1c and the deeper sediment units that are so troublesome.   We persevere.
