The night shift ended their work drilling into more of the highly weathered deep red-brown sands and muds, some rocks to a depth of 392 meters. They stabilized the hole so that the OSG group could to the downhole logging over the interval from -275 to -392 m. They initially had some trouble getting the sondes through the HQ 3 but the drillers helped fix the problem. They continued all day and should finish tonight by 11 PM. After that, the night shift will trip pipe down the hole and start to drill again but we are very low now on mud. The truck carrying 8 tons of mud is on its way and we hope it will arrive tomorrow, on Friday.
During a short hike today while the loggers were working, a group of us got a chance to watch a large polar wolf walk by us at about 200 m. We also saw our first birds. The weather was up to 0 deg C today -- very warm so its a reminder to us about keeping track of the changing air and ice temperatures. Volker has thermisters located as several places along the road and at the platform. With 8 people flying out tomorrow, we managed to get both the day and night shifts out to the rig this evening for a group picture at sunset in front of the drill rig.
cheers.... Julie BG
