Based on the expeditions in 1998 and 2000 a larger, more comprehensive expedition was then conducted in the spring and summer of 2003, mainly financed by the German BMBF. The following four objectives were focused upon:

  • Gaining a better understanding of the recent processes in sediment formation depending on the (measurable) climate and environmental conditions of today.?- Extending the drilled lake sediment archive to the antepenultimate glacial/interglacial (up to 340,000 years).
  • ?Retrieving additional information of regional climate and environmental history via permafrost surface deposits at the periphery of the lake.
  • ?Consolidating the seismic profile by using a stronger acoustical source to collect lake sediment data down to the basic layer.

The results of the pre-site surveys provided the basis for determining the drill locations and the funding for the drilling campaign 2008/09 and the ensuing analyses.
