Basically the scientists pursue two objectives:
- The sediments of the oldest and largest non-glaciated Arctic lake basin shall provide information about the regional climate of the past 3.6 million years and how it developed.?
--> climate history
- Samples of the impact breccia and bedrock shall inform about the crater formation and cratering processes.
?--> impact process
Scientists aim to gain the material they need for their research by a complex drilling campaign: In line with the International Polar Year (2007-2009) two drilling activities are planned to retrieve sediment cores from the lake shore and from the lake.
